Valencia has seen a transformation in recent years to become a major cosmopolitan European city. Once the commercial and industrial powerhouse of Spain, the city has a long history as a trading post. Valencia is a popular city break and holiday destination. Within its luxury hotels, Valencia exemplifies all the rich cultural history of the city and province and combines this with all the modern services and facilities expected from the world's top contemporary hotels.

The Valencia province is situated on the East coast of Spain, facing the Mediterranean sea. While the neighboring province of Alicante is much more recognized for its beach resorts and summer holidays, Valencia offers an altogether more authentic slice of Spain, forged through centuries of Roman, Moor and more recent influences.

Founded by the Romans, the city of Valencia played its first major role as a strategic military colony but it was the moor influences which have left the city with most of its classic appeal, evident throughout. Perhaps most obvious in the Moorish architecture of the mediaeval walls, and most notably the Cathedral and tower of the city, formed from the minaret of the original mosque, the moors have influenced Valencia as much as any Spanish city but their influence is also apparent in the manufacturing and trade which have made the city so important throughout its history.

Leather, paper, ceramics, silk, glass, and silver work have all borne the trademark Valencia stamp of quality and the city continues today to offer a whole range of quality products to residents and visitors. The central market in the city, Mercado Central, has seen traders ply their wares for more than eight centuries and is still the place to find the very best of fresh local produce from the surrounding area, widely considered to be the most fertile in the country. Additional popular markets include the El Rastro flea market and the largest market in the city, the Mercadillo de Cabanyal, held in the old fisherman’s district.

There are of course high end shopping outlets too and many fashionable streets and boutiques, some of which are incorporated into the luxury hotels Valencia has. Some of the best hotels in Valencia occupy some of the stunning architecture of the city, fitting seamlessly into the ancient streets and enduringly and uniquely Valencian culture.
